de Portables is a bit of an unconventional band, to say the least. In the past their albums sounded always very eclectic and critics used to file this band under Post rock. With ‘Topless Is More’ – the title gives you a first glimpse of this bands sense of humour – the quartet from Ghent proves that they can actually make a coherent record with enough interesting songs to hold your and our attention. Although opener ‘Col Phillins’ – another example of how this band doesn’t care about arty farty song titles – and ‘Autist Redding’ sound very post rock, the rest of the album shows that de Portables have tons of talent. ‘Superdedubber’ is a straight on through euhm… dub song while ‘Haut Gay’ vaguely resembles eighties synth rock. And ‘Triportit’ would fit perfectly on the first albums of Beck. In other words: a lot of different styles but worthwhile discovering!
